Whip It Review

Ellen Page is a nerd-girl wanting to break free from her mother's suffocating beauty-pageant dreams. She sneaks off to see a roller derby show and when expressing her admiration for the girls who play, gets invited to try-outs. Guess what, she makes the team and loves it. But now she's living a double life!

If the main character was a boy, and he was trying out for an all-male contact sport like Football, this movie would be crap. It would be the same rehashing coming-of-age story that's been vomited out since the 1960's. But the fact that all of the main characters are female, it really invokes some interesting thoughts about how we view women and aggression. I absolutely loved the whole vibe of the film. Violence, attitude, hair-die, tattoos, and ridiculous stage-names like "Babe Ruthless", "Maggie Mayhem", "Princess Slaya" and "Iron Maven", it's just like pro wrestling! Which I love! And I also love unconventional, "alternative" girls, so this movie was a win. Hard to believe this was Drew Barrymore's directorial debut.

My Highlights:
Every conversation in the second half of the film between Ellen Page and rival team leader, "Iron Maven". The entire feud that they develop is so masterfully constructed, I'd of thought it came from the Rocky franchise.

Overall Rating:
It had attitude, it had a multitude of themes, subplots and intricate messages about society. I can't think of really any complaints. FANTASTIC movie, 5 *s' out of 5, or 10 *'s out of 10!

When You Should See It:
Right away! Go watch it!
