Tracy Morgan's Homophobic Joke Angers Tina Fey and NBC

According to The Hollywood Reporter, star of NBC's 30 Rock and buddy-cop film Cop Out, Tracy Morgan has offended many. During a stand-up comedy routine in Nashville, TN, Morgan made the racy joke that if his son came out of the closet to him, he would take out a knife and stab him. Two things that come to mind reading this is that Morgan really does live his gimmick of saying stupid seemingly-off-the-cuff remarks to be funny, and that he's perpetuating the stereotype that all members of the black community hate the gay community.

NBC and Tina Fey have made it known they were outraged by Morgan's joke, feeling it was disrespectful, irresponsible, and eight-shades of stupid. While Fey was a strong critic of Morgan's joke, she also applauded him for publicly apologizing for it. In a great quote that has a very 30 Rock feel to it, Fey was quoted saying:

"It also doesn't line up with the Tracy Morgan I know, who is not a hateful man and is generally much too sleepy and self-centered to ever hurt another person."

I fear big consequences by NBC over this if Tracy Morgan doesn't save some serious face beyond his public apology. Given that ratings are not always kind and it's frequently snubbed by award committees, 30 Rock might be on the chopping block. Tracy himself might be on the chopping block instead if enough people on the show/in management were offended. I think there's a possibly Morgan might try to use the publicity to use a joking man-kiss with an unsuspecting peer actor on 30 Rock or talk show. Using your craft as a means to show you're not homophobic worked when Eminem teamed up with Elton John after all. Hopefully Morgan does go an extra step though and donates to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, which was founded in 1998 based on the famous case of brutal and murderous gay-bashing of young Matthew Shepard.
