App Review: Captain Antarctica

Captain Antarctica is available on the iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Android devices for $0.99. For this review I played Captain Antarctica on the iPhone.

Ever just want to strap on a jetpack and dive into the ocean? Of course you do! Unfortunately you probably don't have enough money. Luckily there's Captain Antarctica, which is a little more affordable. You play as a penguin with a jetpack diving into the ocean to defeat six bosses.

To defeat each boss you must reach the bottom of the ocean where the boss is located. While you're navigating down you must dodge enemies, eat fish and gain speed. Gaining speed is done by eating fish along your way. The faster you are when you get to the bottom of the ocean, the more damage you're going to do to the boss. Bosses will take a couple of play-throughs of each level to actually defeat. Don't worry, they don't regain health, and it's not a drag to play through each level multiple times. I actually had some fun getting used to each level.

You control Captain Antarctica by tilting your device or using your finger on the touch screen. I played it by tilting, but found instead of being able to hold your phone horizontal you must hold it vertical. At first I was a little upset about this since it was hard to control. I got used to it, and realized that if this was played horizontally the game would be too easy to play through.

There's also a shop in Captain Antarctica that allows you to buy upgrades like more health, a more powerful jet, and other special stuff. Each time you complete or die on a level, you earn money for how far you made it. You'll need some upgrades if you want to beat this game. It gets pretty difficult by the time you get to the last boss. Still, it only took a couple of tries with the best jetpack and a couple of health upgrades to beat the last boss.

Final Say: Captain Antarctica is a fun game to pick up and play. It's not going to take you long to beat but there will be updates. I'm not sure if updates include more bosses but an Endless Run chapter is shown with a COMING SOON sign. For $0.99 it's not asking too much, and I did have fun playing through it. Pick it up when you're looking for a fun and wacky adventure.
