Half Minute Hero - PC Review

Half Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy is available on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and for the PSP for $9.99. For this review I played Half Minute Hero for the PC, and it is very recommended to play this game with a controller.

Half Minute Hero is very fast paced! What do you expect with a title like Half Minute Hero!?
You play as a hero that must save the world from these evil bad guys that can end the world in 30 seconds. Luckily, a nice lady named Time Goddess is here to help you... with a small fee of course. You must level up your hero, help the local people, get better gear, and defeat bad guy after bad guy!

Each level is set up in a classic RPG fashion: You walk around, beat up enemies, go to towns, and find places like caves to save people, or gather new equipment. Each level will have the same goal, but they will have different ways for you to complete this, like having to blow up boulders or flying your trusty dragon over terrain. Fighting in Half Minute Hero was set up perfectly. Your hero just starts fighting once you're in the battle. The only control you have over your hero is the ability to leave the battle or to use an item. This works great for the fast-pace environment.

Time is a big deal in this game. That's where the Time Goddess comes in. In most of the towns a statue that looks like her is set up so you can pray. You do have to pay to pray, but after you pray your time gets put back at 30 seconds. Each time you pray the price goes up by 100, so you'll need to pay attention to how much money you're spending on food, armor, and weapons.

Half Minute Hero took me two and a half hours to beat the main game, but that's not all! After you beat that, you start unlocking new adventures that allow you to play as other people, and even an adventure that gives you 300 seconds (it's harder than it sounds!). I had a blast going through all these adventures, and it took me a total of four hours to beat the main game plus all the other adventures.

I loved Half Minute Hero! It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The only complaint I have is that when the game gets harder and harder you start to rush around, which is completely fine, but the problem was moving around I would sometimes go too far, or not far enough, and bump into a wall. This ended up costing me some time in the end, and time is very important in this game. Though this didn't happen all the time, when it did it felt like I was moving on a graph, and couldn't freely move around.

Still, this complaint isn't terrible, and I still recommend Half Minute Hero to everyone. There's even leaderboards and multiplayer for even more replay value! I also want to mention the look, and sound to the game was fantastic! The music was very metal at times, and very calming at other times. It worked perfectly with the game. You could switch between a retro look, or a more mordern look. I kept it on the modern look, but it's really the matter of what you like better.

Final Say: This is a must buy for the PC. I had some moments of frustration with the controls, but this didn't bring the game down at all. I still recommend it for everyone. This game will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, and anyone that loves RPGs will love this game. I can't recommend this enough! For $9.99 you'll get 4 to 5 hours of really fun value!
